Rival regents feared the immense wealth and military might of Clan Douglas. They invited the teenage 6th Earl of Douglas and his brother to Edinburgh Castle. The young guests feasted and bonded with the child king, James II. At dinner's end, a black bull's head was placed on the table. This terrifying omen served as a traditional Scottish symbol of imminent death. The terrified Douglas brothers were dragged away despite the young king’s tears. Following a mock trial on Castle Hill, both brothers were summarily beheaded.
